    PORTILLO GOES CRAZY: More Than 10 Metres of Snow and Counting

    Want snow? Then take a look at what’s happening in Chile.

    There are good ski seasons.

    There are great ski seasons.

    And then there are seasons when a ski resort gets more than 10 metres of snow and there are still weeks left to keep adding to the total.

    That’s exactly what is happening at Portillo, Chile.

    The legendary Andes ski resort has already reached 1,021 centimetres of accumulated snowfall during the 2026 season.

    More than ten metres.

    And the best part?

    It could still snow more.

    ❄️ MORE THAN 10 METRES. YES, REALLY.

    Portillo has now joined the very exclusive club of ski resorts that have received more than 10 metres of snow in a single season.

    And this isn’t just any ski resort.

    Portillo is one of the great names in South American skiing.

    Located high in the Andes, close to the Chile-Argentina border, it is famous for its huge snowfall, high-altitude terrain and spectacular mountain scenery.

    But this season has been something else.

    1,021 centimetres.

    More than ten metres.

    And the number is still going up.

    🤯 ALMOST DOUBLE THE NORMAL AMOUNT

    To understand how extraordinary this season has been, look at the historical average.

    Portillo normally receives around 5.1 metres of snow per season.

    This year it has already passed 10.2 metres.

    That’s almost twice the normal seasonal snowfall.

    And the Southern Hemisphere winter isn’t over yet.

    Portillo has even extended its season into October thanks to the exceptional snow conditions.

    🌨️ AND IT’S STILL SNOWING

    Here’s where things get even more interesting.

    The latest snowfall hasn’t been insignificant.

    Portillo has continued receiving fresh snow during September, adding even more to an already enormous seasonal total.

    So those 1,021 centimetres may not be the final number.

    The season continues.

    The snow continues.

    And the counter continues to rise.

    10 metres today.

    Could it reach 11 metres before the season ends?

    Nobody knows.

    But there is still time.

    🏔️ A WINTER THAT DIDN’T LOOK LIKE THIS AT FIRST

    And here’s the strange part.

    The season didn’t begin in a way that suggested Portillo would end up with such an incredible snow total.

    During July, a succession of major snowstorms caused serious access problems in the region.

    The international route connecting Chile and Argentina was affected, with heavy snowfall making access extremely difficult at times.

    While the roads were struggling…

    the snow kept falling.

    And falling.

    And falling.

    💥 THEN THE SNOW JUST KEPT COMING

    The big change came during July.

    Several major snowfalls dumped huge amounts of snow across the Andes and transformed the season.

    Portillo went from a difficult start to one of the snowiest destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Then August brought more snow.

    September brought more snow again.

    And suddenly…

    10.21 metres.

    And counting.

    🏂 PORTILLO IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN SNOW

    IT’S HERE! Europe Is Already Skiing in September

    While you’re still thinking about winter, other people are already skiing.

    Yes. You read that correctly.

    The 2026/27 ski season has already started in Europe.

    And, as usual, the first skiers aren’t waiting until December. They aren’t even waiting for November or October.

    They’re already up on a glacier in Italy, more than 3,000 metres above sea level.

    🎿 Val Senales is already skiing

    On September 19, Val Senales in South Tyrol, Italy, opened its glacier for skiing.

    After months of talking about snow, ski resorts and when winter would finally arrive, we finally have our answer:

    Winter has started.

    Well… sort of.

    Don’t expect the entire resort to be open with hundreds of kilometres of pistes.

    This is September.

    But there is enough snow on the glacier for the first skiers of the season to get back to doing what they’ve been waiting months to do:

    Put on their skis and start riding.

    And honestly…

    Is there a better way to start September?

    The season starts above 3,000 metres

    Val Senales has one major advantage.

    Its glacier reaches around 3,200 metres, allowing skiing to continue even when it still feels like summer down in the valley.

    The highest point reaches approximately 3,212 metres.

    While people in many European cities are still sitting outside enjoying 25°C temperatures, skiers are already getting ready for another winter season high in the mountains.

    Summer down below. Winter up above.

    Welcome to September.

    But there’s a catch…

    Before you jump in your car and head to Italy, there’s something you need to know.

    The entire resort isn’t open.

    The September opening is mainly focused on training.

    Ski clubs, racers and serious skiers are among the first people back on the snow, getting ready for the season ahead.

    But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy glacier skiing.

    If you’re desperate to get back on snow and don’t mind getting up early, this is already one of Europe’s first opportunities to ski.

    This is not the time to sleep in

    September skiing has one unofficial rule:

    Get up early or miss out.

    The glacier starts operating very early in the morning because the sun has a major influence on the snow conditions.

    During this time of year, the snow can change quickly, with the best conditions usually found during the early hours.

    Forget the typical winter ski day.

    Here the routine is different:

    Alarm → glacier → skis → snow → repeat.

    And this is only the beginning

    Val Senales isn’t the whole story.

    The interesting part is what comes next.

    Over the coming weeks, more Alpine glaciers are expected to start operating.

    Austria is also preparing its first openings.

    Kaunertal, Pitztal, Sölden, Stubai and Hintertux are among the resorts appearing on the early-season calendar.

    That means one thing:

    More skiing options are coming every week.

    First the glaciers.

    Then the high-altitude resorts.

    Then November arrives.

    And finally, the real winter begins.

    Ski addicts can finally breathe again

    Let’s be honest.

    For most people, September is still summer.

    But for people who have been thinking about skiing for months…

    This Idea Hasn’t Worked for Years. Should I Keep Going?

    I want to talk about something a little different today.

    SkiExpeditions.org has been an idea in my head for years.

    I’ve been trying to organize ski trips for the last two years, but if I’m completely honest, I haven’t really taken the project seriously until now.

    So this is the first time I’m actually giving it a proper chance.

    And I have a question:

    Can this idea really work?

    Why SkiExpeditions.org?

    There are group trips for almost everything.

    Yoga.

    Hiking.

    Diving.

    Surfing.

    Cycling.

    Adventure travel.

    You can travel alone, join a group of strangers and meet people who share your interests.

    But skiing is different.

    There are plenty of ski travel agencies, of course. But most of them basically offer hotel + ski pass + transfers.

    And normally you go with your friends, your partner or your family.

    If you don’t have anyone to go with, you often simply don’t go.

    That’s what I think is missing.

    What if you could just join a ski trip?

    Imagine wanting to ski in Japan, Chile, Alaska, Kyrgyzstan or New Zealand.

    You don’t have anyone to go with.

    Instead of giving up, you simply join a small group of other skiers and snowboarders.

    You arrive at the airport not knowing anyone.

    And a week later you’ve skied together, travelled together, shared beers, dinners, adventures and maybe even made some new friends.

    That’s the idea behind SkiExpeditions.org.

    Not just selling accommodation and a ski pass.

    Creating trips for people who love skiing + travelling + discovering unusual destinations.

    And I don’t want to visit the usual places

    There are already thousands of companies selling trips to the Alps.

    France.

    Austria.

    Italy.

    Switzerland.

    Andorra.

    They’re great.

    But what about skiing in Kyrgyzstan?

    Japan?

    Chile?

    New Zealand?

    Alaska?

    Georgia?

    That’s the kind of trip I want to create.

    Places where the journey is almost as important as the skiing.

    But here’s the problem

    Maybe it’s a great idea.

    Maybe it isn’t.

    People have told me for years that they love the concept.

    But saying “that’s a great idea” is very different from actually booking a trip.

    And that’s what I need to find out.

    Maybe people don’t want to travel with strangers.

    Maybe the trips are too expensive.

    Maybe the destinations are too complicated.

    Maybe the market is simply too small.

    Or maybe…

    I just haven’t pushed the idea hard enough yet.

    That’s why I’m giving SkiExpeditions.org a real chance now.

    I want your opinion

    Would you join a ski trip with people you’ve never met?

    Would you travel to Japan, Alaska, Chile, Kyrgyzstan or New Zealand with a group?

    What would make you book?

    I don’t need everyone to like the idea.

    Skiing was not always the high-tech sport we know today.
