The 2026/27 ski season has already started in Europe.
And, as usual, the first skiers aren’t waiting until December. They aren’t even waiting for November or October.
They’re already up on a glacier in Italy, more than 3,000 metres above sea level.
🎿 Val Senales is already skiing
On September 19, Val Senales in South Tyrol, Italy, opened its glacier for skiing.
After months of talking about snow, ski resorts and when winter would finally arrive, we finally have our answer:
Winter has started.
Well… sort of.
Don’t expect the entire resort to be open with hundreds of kilometres of pistes.
This is September.
But there is enough snow on the glacier for the first skiers of the season to get back to doing what they’ve been waiting months to do:
Put on their skis and start riding.
And honestly…
Is there a better way to start September?
The season starts above 3,000 metres
Val Senales has one major advantage.
Its glacier reaches around 3,200 metres, allowing skiing to continue even when it still feels like summer down in the valley.
The highest point reaches approximately 3,212 metres.
While people in many European cities are still sitting outside enjoying 25°C temperatures, skiers are already getting ready for another winter season high in the mountains.

But there’s a catch…
Before you jump in your car and head to Italy, there’s something you need to know.
The entire resort isn’t open.
The September opening is mainly focused on training.
Ski clubs, racers and serious skiers are among the first people back on the snow, getting ready for the season ahead.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy glacier skiing.
If you’re desperate to get back on snow and don’t mind getting up early, this is already one of Europe’s first opportunities to ski.
This is not the time to sleep in
September skiing has one unofficial rule:
Get up early or miss out.
The glacier starts operating very early in the morning because the sun has a major influence on the snow conditions.
During this time of year, the snow can change quickly, with the best conditions usually found during the early hours.
Forget the typical winter ski day.
Here the routine is different:
Alarm → glacier → skis → snow → repeat.
And this is only the beginning
Val Senales isn’t the whole story.
The interesting part is what comes next.
Over the coming weeks, more Alpine glaciers are expected to start operating.
Austria is also preparing its first openings.
Kaunertal, Pitztal, Sölden, Stubai and Hintertux are among the resorts appearing on the early-season calendar.
That means one thing:
More skiing options are coming every week.
First the glaciers.
Then the high-altitude resorts.
Then November arrives.
And finally, the real winter begins.
Ski addicts can finally breathe again
Let’s be honest.
For most people, September is still summer.
